BroadChain has learned that on April 9th, according to CNBC, OpenAI has suspended its Stargate infrastructure project in the UK. The primary reasons include high energy costs and uncertainties in the regulatory environment.
The Stargate project was initially announced in September 2025, with plans to deploy up to 8,000 GPUs in collaboration with Nscale and Nvidia. It is currently in a state of suspension.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that the company is still evaluating the conditions for advancing the project and will proceed when the regulatory environment and energy costs are more suitable for long-term infrastructure investment.
Last month, OpenAI announced significant adjustments to its Stargate computing infrastructure project, abandoning plans to build its own data centers in favor of utilizing third-party cloud services such as AWS and Google Cloud for computing power. The total projected computing power expenditure by 2030 has been revised down from the previously estimated $1.4 trillion to approximately $600 billion.
